A healthy diet isn’t just about the right foods. It’s about having the right amount of the right foods. Although food helps us grow, gives us nutrients and energy to help our brains and bodies work properly, too much of any one thing isn’t healthy.

How much do you need?
  • For a healthy diet, every day you need to eat at least:
    • 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day – 1 serving is like 1 apple or 2 apricots or ½ cup stewed fruit or ½ cup salad/mixed vegetables or 1 potato;
    • 5 servings of breads, wholegrain breads, pasta and cereals – 1 serving is like 1 roll or 1 slice of bread or 1 cup cooked rice or 2 Weet-Bix;
    • 1 to 2 servings of protein foods such as legumes (beans), eggs, meat – 1 serving is like 1 egg or 2 slices of cooked meat or 1 chicken leg or ¾ cup baked beans, ½ cup nuts and seeds;
    • 2-3 servings of dairy foods and alternatives such as milk, soymilk, yoghurt and cheese – 1 serving is like 1 cup milk or 1 pottle yoghurt or 2 slices cheese.
  • To stay healthy, it is important to only eat small amounts of foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar, such as lollies, chocolate, potato chips, takeaway food, butter and soft drinks.
  • Remember it is also important that you get some exercise everyday as this helps to keep you healthy.
