It is important to eat healthy and delicious snacks that will keep you full of energy and give you the nutrients you need to grow. Here are some yummy and healthy snack ideas (get an adult to help you put them together!)
- Fruit Smoothies – use a combination of milk, juice or soymilk with yoghurt and fruit that you like and blend together. Freeze the leftovers for healthy ice blocks.
- Fruit or Vegetable Kebabs – thread cubed fruits onto bamboo kebab skewers and serve with yoghurt or if you made vegetable kebabs you could serve them with your favourite sauce, like chilli sauce. Fruit and vegetable kebabs are also great barbecued or grilled.
- Pancakes/Pikelets – make up a pancake or pikelet mix and add dried fruit or nuts for something different or frozen berries to give it a great taste.
- Popcorn – for a savoury taste sprinkle with a small amount of brewers yeast or for a sweet flavour mix the popcorn with some diced dried fruit.
- Pretzels – use pretzels to dip in a yummy hummus.
- Toasted sandwiches – make a toasted sandwich using your favourite ingredients or why not try one using some apple and raisins and then toast it – delicious!
- Mini Pizza’s – try using mini pita bread to make some mini pizzas. Spread some tomato relish onto the pita bread then top with toppings you like – some yummy ones are pineapple, mushrooms, capsicum and some Edam cheese. You can also make mini pizzas using English style muffins which are cut in half.
- Vegetable Sticks with dips such as hummus – slice up some cauliflower, carrots, celery and any other vegetables you enjoy and use your favourite hummus to dip.
- Dried Fruit and Nuts – make up your own mix using a variety of different nuts and diced dried fruit that you like.
- Homemade Muesli Bars – look at the NuForce5 recipe section for the 'Energy Bar' recipe, it is tasty and quick to make.
- Cheese sticks - make a tasty snack.
- Fruit muffins – try making a muffin mix and then adding 1 cup of any fruit that you like to give it a delicious taste. If you don’t have a recipe, try this one: heat the oven to 220°C. While the oven is heating in a bowl put 1 ½ cups of flour, ½ cup wholemeal flour, 4 teaspoons baking powder and ½ cup sugar and mix together. In another bowl or jug place 75g margarine melted then blend in 1 cup soymilk and 1 egg. Stir in the fruit you have chosen. Place spoonfuls in a well greased muffin tray and bake for 12 - 15 minutes.
- Fruit - if you are looking for something that is quick, a piece of fruit is a great choice.
